3 Ways to Enjoy the Holidays While Maintaining Your Fitness Regiment

Even in a year like this — and maybe now more than ever — we all need something to celebrate.

Fortunately, we are now in the home stretch, and the holidays are just around the corner. This will be a time when we can hopefully release some of the pent-up stress we all have from 2020 and (hopefully) start seeing a few more of our loved ones.

That said, some people are probably already feeling some additional anxiety about the months ahead. When it comes to maintaining a fitness regimen and diet plans, it is always difficult during the holiday festivities and celebrations. This year will be an even bigger challenge.

Even those who tried to stay diligent during lockdowns — and all the gym closures — are probably feeling like they slacked off a bit this year. But whether you’ve actually put on the “quarantine 15” or are just a bit behind your goals, you should start by being easier on yourself.

It's been tough and you're not a superhero. Try not to get too worried about the annual minefield of holiday treats, drinks, and parties to confront.

Relax. Don’t worry. With a bit of effort, you really can still stick to your routines.

The following tips will help make sure you can actually enjoy the holidays while maintaining your fitness regiment.

1. Forget the Gym

By now, you’re probably used to training without world-class equipment available at the local gym. If you're like most of us, your living room or garage might be the new fitness center. And you might be tested even further in the coming months if you are traveling and farther away from your familiar workout settings. Don't fret. Now is the time to remember you can get fit anywhere. All it takes is the right mindset. Choose from my proven cardio and bodyweight exercises that will not just help you maintain your current fitness level — but achieve impressive results. All you need is a little bit of motivation and some commitment.

2. Don’t Go It Alone

Sometimes, training by yourself is great. Other days, you will lack the motivation and just sleepwalk your way through a routine. So don’t try to always be a superstar. At least a few times a week, look to attend a live online class through Zoom or another collaborative video service. Even beyond the engaging content of a live trainer, just signing up for a session will help you hold yourself accountable. Maybe it’s easy to make excuses and skip leg day after a long day at the (home) office. But if you’ve already committed to a class, chances are you will suck it up and not miss that workout.

3. Treat Day, Cheat Days

Sticking to a strict diet is always hard. Cheat meals are one time-tested way to help stay on track. Generally, if you can do the right thing at least 80% of the time, the other 20% won’t hurt you too badly. For real fitness results, you might want to aim for 90/10. At least in a normal month — but don't forget that these are the holidays. Plan accordingly and let loose strategically. Don’t waste a good cheat meal on a boring Starbucks breakfast craving out of the blue. Instead, use your willpower during your down time and then allow yourself to fully relax around outings, family and friends. If you give yourself something to look forward to, the days in between will be easier.
